Minimized CoreTemp window appears together with overheat warning and Close button does not work

Post by yup »

On my system Core Temp window settings are:
  • "Start Core Temp minimized" - On
  • "Close Core Temp to the notification area" - On
  • "Hide taskbar button" - On
When the overheat warning message window appears, simultaneously minimized Core Temp window appears near the Start button:

After pressing "Yes" the warning window closes, but program's window neither disappears automatically, nor can be closed by "Close" button. The only way to get rid of it is maximize this window and only then close it.

What OS are you using? I can't reproduce this on Windows 10.
Did you set Core Temp to hide the taskbar button when minimized? If yes, try to change this setting and see if this makes a difference.

    Windows XP.
I thought it was quite obvious from the UI elements ("Start" button, task bar, title bars, etc.)

And this problem exists for years - at least, since 2014 (when I first time installed Core Temp).

    Yes:

I checked this many times - with every new version. Every time difference is the same:
After closing of the "Core Temp: Question" dialog by answering "Yes", program window remains visible (= minimized to Taskbar), and I have to close it manually (by pressing of its Taskbar button and then a Close button or a context menu item).

So the same amount of additional actions, just slightly different picture: a Taskbar button vs extra-shrunken window.

    I don't have XP anymore.
    On my Win 2003 I can't reproduce this :(
But in general, I assume that it's just a Windows limitation.

On Win7 I can't reproduce this too. Later I will try on Win2003.

This is unlikely. For communication with my neighbours I use a program which works exactly in this way: only icon in the tray, and when I am calling somebody, a notification dialog pops up on his screen, without appearing of the program window or the taskbar button.

    -----------------------
Also the "Core Temp: Question" has yet one issue (not a bug): this window inherits "always on top" flag from the main program window. As a result, when this mode is not chosen for a whole program, this important warning appears below (z-order) the window of a current (active) program and remains unnoticed, if the current window is large enough.
I think, the "Core Temp: Question" window should have "always on top" flag unconditionally.

There are multiple ways of displaying a message box. If their message box isn't tied to a window, it will work just fine.

It is just a messagebox, which inherits the properties of its parent window. Therefore it can't be separately set to be always on top.

    AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (True Spirit 140 Direct) / Mobo: Asrock Fatal1ty X470 / EVO 970 500GB + WD Blue 250GB + HDD / GPU: Dell RX 570 4GB / Mem: 2x16GB DDR4-3200 G.Skill 32GTZKW TridentZ - 32GB total / PSU: Seasonic Prime Ultra Gold 650W

    From the Microsoft documentation:

    Code: Select all

    int MessageBox(
HWND hWnd, // handle of owner window
LPCTSTR lpText,	// address of text in message box
LPCTSTR lpCaption,	// address of title of message box
UINT uType // style of message box
    );

    Code: Select all

    int MessageBoxEx(
HWND hWnd, // handle of owner window
LPCTSTR lpText,	// address of text in message box
LPCTSTR lpCaption,	// address of title of message box
UINT uType, // style of message box
        WORD wLanguageId // language identifier
    );
    In both functions:
uType - Specifies a set of bit flags that determine the contents and behavior of the dialog box.
    One of that flags is:
MB_TOPMOST - The message box is created with the WS_EX_TOPMOST window style.
