Issue rearranging Notification Area Taskbar icons

Post by javky1 »

Hello,

I just wanted to report that there's an issue on my Windows 11 computer with the notification area icons that appear in the taskbar. When I try to drag and rearrange them, they don't cooperate. The one that I dragged always moves, but not usually to where I put it, and frequently many of the other icons will also move randomly. Sometimes, the one I moved will swap with the one I dragged it onto, but this doesn't happen every time. The permutation that results from moving one is unpredictable. Each icon is always present somewhere, and there are no duplicates. If I want a particular configuration, I often find it impossible to achieve. I have the extra icons on, and all cores shown, but any variation where I turn off some or all the extra icons, or only show highest temperature per processor, or only highest temperature, all still result in the same uncooperativeness.

However, I have found that if I turn off the extra icons and only show temperature per core, of which my machine has 8, while I still can't rearrange it to any configuration I want, if I shuffle it around and try to get it back to sorted order (core 0, 1, 2...7) it will often jump back to sorted order fairly easily. I also found in this case that cores 1 and 2 were impossible to separate, always showing up as 1, then 2, within the first 4 icons.

This has been a persistent issue I believe as long as I've been using this, so I'd say probably at least since 2019.

As far as I know, this is a Windows thing. There's not much that I can do from my side about this.
I do recommend switching the icons to show 1 temp per CPU. Then you can add the other icons like RAM/CPU/PWR usage and still keep the number of icons relatively low.

Hasn't this always been the case on all versions of Windows?
