Dual Processor Temperatures

Post by ijcampbell »

Hi - just wondering if it's normal to have differing temperatures on 2 processors ? I could understand a slight variance but mine seem quite different !
Intel Xeon E5-2650 v2 in a Dell Precision T7610.

Core Temps between 60C and 67C on first processor and 76C to 81C on the second.

Any thoughts ? Could it be I need to apply fresh thermal paste ?

I suspect the main factor is that the OS does not necessarily utilize both cpu's all the time, it will generally use 1 cpu as the primary, depending on the applications, the other might just sit idle for most processes and apps that doesn't use many cores.
In gaming for example, most games only use 2-4 threads/cores so the second cpu will not see any usage.

If you where to run a multicore benchmark, like Cinebench r23, both cpu's should get the same load, and show about the same temperature.

Other things to consider:
You could have issues with Thermal paste cpu/cpu-cooler contact.
Are the cpu coolers identical?
How is Airflow? Is one perhaps more restricted due to components in the area? Does removing the sidepanel/opening the case change things?
It can, in theory also be that your cpu's have different levels of performance, aka, one simply has better silicone and therefore runs cooler, thought it usually won't be that drastic.
