AMD Ryzen Temps and CoreTemp

Post by falcongrey »

I noticed in the FAQ that it states that the AMD chips only have 1 temp reading, though I'm a bit concerned by this statement as there are actually 2. At least I know with my Ryzen this is the case. There is the CPU temp reading that typically is the internal silicon temp. Then there is the higher CPU Casing temp which monitors the DIE and Casing around the chip. Typically this temp tends to be around 10c higher than the CPU temp I've noticed. I can easily see them both on my ROG STRIX X570-F Gaming board with a Ryzen 7 3700x.

CoreTemp 1.17.1 x64 running on Windows 11, Version 21H2, Build 22000.168 seems to only see the CPU Casing temp sadly and not the actual CPU temp. Is this by intention?

That section in the FAQ is a bit outdated, it was referring to AMD generations between K10 (Phenom) and K15 (FX, *dozer).
Ryzen chips indeed have multiple sensors, and the next Core Temp version will introduce a large change to cater that.
