System Tray Display Suggestion - value's units

Post by Bill_Bright »

Long time user of CoreTemp. Love it. Always recommend it.

I would like to see the option in Settings to display the value's units. For example, instead of just seeing 23 for the CPU temperature, I would like the option to display 23°C. The same for CPU load, power, etc. If my processor is currently pulling 21 watts, for example, I would like to see 21W. Same if my CPU is at 19 percent load, I would like to see 19%.

I used those examples because 23, 21 and 19 were exactly what I saw in my System Tray as I typed that. Yes, I can hover over those numbers and learn what they mean. But if °C, W and % where displayed too, no stopping to hover is required to see what's going on.

I say "option" because some users may already have a crowded System Tray and of course, having the unit symbols displayed too will take up more space.

I think (hope) others would like to see this suggestion implemented too.

Thanks.

The problem with displaying anything more than 2 digits is due to the very limited space in the icon.
With 100% scaling, an icon has a size of 16x16 pixels, which is roughly sufficient for 2 digits, maybe 3, if it's showing 1xx.
Adding a unit (% / ° / W) to the displayed value will most likely cause the text to be cut off at the sides. It's the primary reason that units were never added in the first place to the notification area icons.

Hmmm, first, thanks for the quick reply.

I can certainly see your point - at least for some of the icons. For example, with the clock speed where it might be 3.6, adding G would be a problem, and certainly GHz would be out of the question.

For temp, perhaps 23C would work but not 23°C. I suppose some tasks might push the CPU to 100% and 100W or more.

And I know with my old eyes, I would not want the numerals to be smaller either or less defined.

Oh well. Seemed like a good idea at the time! ;)

Thanks again.
