Overheat protection shutdown at 41 degrees celcius

Post by Mikel »

I have an HP 15-f003wm notebook. I have installed Windows 10 Home x64 and coretemp. Since I have activated the overheat protection my notebook has been saying that 41 degrees celsius is a critical temp and shuts down the machine. I have the setting set to automatic with the 'only notify when critical temperature is reached'. Then both notify options are selected and the power down option is also selected. I have done some research and it appears that is the normal idle temp for that machine. This occurs a few minutes after windows has been started while only in idle, no other programs are running. Windows was installed fresh from scratch and is completely up to date. BIOS is also at the most current version.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! I have been using this program for a few years now and it has help me more then a few times with overheating issues, as I build and fix custom pc's.

Please post a screenshot and a register dump (Tools menu).
You can disable overheat protection in the meantime.

here are the 2 things asked for.

I also selected the TjMax setting and it was saying about 68 degrees left to max.

I should have mentioned earlier that this is a friends notebook.

I have just discovered that this issue only happens when on battery power. She forgot to give the the charger yesterday so I had to use up the battery, now that I have it plugged in the problem does not exist. As soon as I pull the plug Coretemp pops up with the overheating message. Plug it back in and the message goes away.

P.S. I have had coretemp installed on every build that I do and every time I fix a pc I have installed it. Never have I had an issue until this minor one. So again Great job guys I'm glad that this program exists.

here is the requested while the error is active and no power cord attached. The previous is with the power cord plugged in. The error only occurs when on battery and not plugged in.

Thanks. I looked at the register dump, and the PROCHOT threshold was reached, as it's in the register's log.
I'm not sure why that is, but it could be just the way this processor behaves when it's running off of the battery.

With that said, I wouldn't worry at all unless the temperature starts getting close to the TjMax value.

Thanks very much for the help. I switched the shutdown to happen when the TjMax setting gets to the 5% to max threshold. All is good now. I figured as much once i figured out the power cord issue, but I just wanted everyone to be updated to the progress. All is well now. As always i will continue to use this program, Great job!

Is the overheat protection shutdown temp built-in or can you set it to what ever you want btw?
