Incorrect Temp readings w/ Penryn / Wolfdale

Post by LowEnd »

I think CoreTemp 0.96.1 is showing incorrect temps with my C2D E8400. At reference speed, the CPU boots at 42 / 43°C (Core1 / 2), idles at 48 / 50 °C and shoots to 65 / 69°C with moderate work.
That seems a bit high, as I am running a well-cooled system:

- Zalman 9700Cu, well-seated
- 3 x 120mm Fan front, rear and top @ ~960 RPM
- 1 x 90mm Fan side
- GeForce 8800GTX with individual fan and external exhaust
- Power supply with 120mm fan, individual intake through floor
- Room temp 22°C

The motherboard sensor for the CPU shows different temps: boot at 28°C, idle at 30°C, load 48°C.

I've read in a few different forums about alot of E8400 and E8500 owners with similar or identical problems.
Is it possible that the Penryns have a TJunctionMax lower than the 105°C that CoreTemp applies? Wouldn't this explain the difference between the delta-calculated temp in CoreTemp and at the motherboard sensor?

More info on my CPU and the rest of my system is available here (German): Image

I would agree with you on that to some extent.

I have the same CPU as you, (E8400) and my core 0 never hits lower than 42C ... the second core can and does most often to 32C or lower when idle. On load it seems to hit 54C to 60C stock with a TRUE and an ANTEC 900 Gamer case with 5 x 120 CM fans and 1 x 200 CM fan. I think my system is pretty cool overall but the CPU always seems to hit 42C on the first core.

Not sure what gives. Maybe a fix to the latest Penryn update is needed to show proper temps.

Wicked good program all the same.

NB: Are you overclocking or keeping it stock?
