Wrong temp detection on E8200 and Asus P5B mobo

Hi ppl,

Just installed CoreTemp 0.96.1 on my rig and surprise: it didn't detect correctly my temp. It only displays 50 deg. C on both cores no matter if i'm running prime95 or if my system is idle. I think it's a bug or something.

If you have any idea on what i'm talking about please reply.

Thank you.

It a problem with your CPU, please look here:

I don't think that's the CPU, more likely i suspect the motherboard BIOS.

I have a suggestion for you: please add a new option to CT: "Start with Windows"

I believe it's the CPU. Did you read my link?

And that's in the to-do list :)

Yes, you're right...

BTW: Why Everest UE can read the temp. (not the core temp) ???

Because it's reading the motherboard sensor.

I've read the above link, but I'm unsure that it is a CPU issue as the link is concerned with Yorkfield CPU's, but the E8xxx series are Wolfdale.

I have a similar problem to the OP in that Core Temp gives me a static idle reading; ie when windows loads and Core Temp is running it reports a value that doesn't seem to change.

My situation differs in that the value Core Temp displays is 45c, but when I run Orthos to stress both cores, the Core Temp reading does gradually rise to 49/50c, depending on the room temperature. The readings from both cores aren't exactly the same all the time either, you get the typical sporadic 1/2c difference between the 2 core temperatures.

So it looks to me as if Core Temp will only register any changes in temperature if my cores heat up to over 45c.

The latest beta of SpeedFan also exhibits this behavior; ie displays a seemingly static temperature, but when both cores are under full load, the temperature reading does rise. The only difference is that the temperature SpeedFan initially displays is 40c, and when the displayed temperatures do rise, they're exactly 5c lower than the Core Temp readings; ie the values displayed in Core Temp and SpeedFan mirror each other when they rise and fall, but with a 5c difference between the values shown.

Have you any thoughts/input about this anomaly please?

TIA, newbie dagwoood :)

There can not be any bugs in retreiving the temps because if there was something wrong, it wouldn't have worked at all, on any CPU (as the code is identical for all Yonah, Conroe and Penryn).
Yorkfield is simply two Wolfdales stuck together, so the point you were making about the thread on XS talking about a Yorkfield doesn't hold water.
Anyway there seems to be a major issue with DTS and 45nm... :(

Thanks for the clarification The Coolest.

As I posted earlier, Core Temp only displays temperature changes above 45c. Would these reported temperatures be accurate do you think?

I've talked with some ppl from Asus and they told me that a new BIOS version is on it's way that will fix the abnormal temp. readings (???).
