Core Temp RC5 Incorrect Max Temp

Post by thomat65 »

Interesting background story for reading pleasure: Was using "Overheat protection" for a while set to run a script that restarts my computer. Had to stop using it because it would occasionally trigger high temp when it shouldn't have, I'd come home to a restarted computer, etc. 'Not a big deal' I thought, 'I'll just turn off Overheat protection.' After that episode I've been keeping an eye on Core Temp's max recorded temperature.

The problem: Recently Core Temp decided my CPU has reached a max temp of 90 Celsius (20 above Tj max). This is impossible... it takes several minutes of Prime95 on all 4 cores with CPU fan unplugged to reach max junction temp, and it's impossible to reach Tj max with 1 or 2 cores full load even with the CPU fan unplugged. Virus scanning is the only automated thing my PC does and that only uses one core, and the CPU fan is plugged in and spinning constantly. It takes effort to get more than 50C (Prime95 stressing as I write this and it has plateaued at 51C).

So I crack open the log files and this doesn't make sense to me:

Code: Select all

CPUID:	0x100F43
Processor:	AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE (Deneb)
Platform:	Socket AM3 (941 pin)
Revision:	RB-C3
Lithography:	45nm

Session start:	21:33:02 - March 27 - 2013

Time	CPU 0 Temp. (°) CPU 0	Low temp. (°)	High temp. (°)	Core load (%)	CPU speed (MHz)
// skip a lot
3/31/2013 9:21	37			27	48	51	3392.63
3/31/2013 9:21	37			27	48	51	3392.63
3/31/2013 9:21	37			27	90	69	3392.63
3/31/2013 9:22	37			27	90	72	3392.63
I attached the log (this snippet is from the neighborhood of line 30156). Notice the random skip of High temp from 48 to 90. Also this is probably not relevant but I'm not overclocking. I can provide other computer specs

Great job on everything else though. I can't do this much complaining without giving props. Core Temp has been invaluable for the past several years.
