Coretemp 1.0 RC3 + UEFI = Crash (I'm willing to help)

Post by premudriy »

Hello everyone,

I have recently built a modern computer: Asus Rampage iv exteme, i7 3930k. The motherboard has an option to install Windows 7 in UEFI mode, which I did. Since the first day I installed the system the Core temp would crash exactly as described in this thread: http://www.alcpu.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=2197

I have even reinstalled Windows from scratch, hoping that some program was conflicting.Turns out that even on the freshest Windows install Coretemp crashes. ( Even tried Windows 7 with SP1 and without it.)

That's when I tried a normal/BIOS/non-UEFI setup of Windows and found out that in this mode Coretemp runs just as it always did on other computers.

So, this is not a program compatibility/conflict as suggested in the other thread mentioned above. This is definitely a problem of Coretemp running on Windows 7 64-bit setup in UEFI mode. I'm almost willing to bet that the person in mentioned thread probably also had Windows in UEFI mode (though not sure).

I am going to reinstall my whole system once more, again in UEFI mode, hoping that this issue will be fixed. Also since I will keep it in UEFI, I am open to help developers to troubleshoot the issue. Please, just let me know what information you need from me and I will gladly collaborate to hopefully solve it for other people who have Windows setup with UEFI.

Thank you!

Hi and thanks for your testing.
I'm interested to know how do you enable/disable the UEFI mode? Does it require you to reinstall the OS for that?

Yes, I have to reinstall the OS in either regular/BIOS or UEFI mode. I'm not sure if there is a way to switch to the other mode once OS is installed, but I'm almost positive that it has to be reinstalled from scratch. This is my first computer that's capable of supporting Windows 7 in UEFI.

So I have 1 CD-DVD drive. With this motherboard, when I put Windows 7 64-bit DVD into the drive and enter the bios boot menu it gives me not one but 2 choices: boot CD-DVD drive, and UEFI boot CD-DVD drive. Correspondingly, it proceeds installing Windows either the old way or the UEFI. Also in UEFI mode Windows automatically partitions the drives using GPT instead of MBR.

I also use Fedora linux and it does the same thing, i.e. motherboard proposes me to boot CD-DVD drive in regular or UEFI mode.

Alright people, after a few days playing with UEFI setup I have to admit: I've given up on UEFI. I thought that Coretemp was the only thing that was not working on my system, but after going though setting up other apps and drivers I've found there are a lot more issues. I've had all sorts of issues with bluetooth and video drivers, benchmarks software, and even in Linux I've had troubles setting up grub to boot UEFI windows.

So, my advice to people who are trying to setup their system in UEFI mode: forget it and stick with regular/BIOS setup. It's going to make your life a lot easier. UEFI is just too raw to be used full time, unless you want to experiment.

P.S.: Since I promised, I will still be available to test Coretemp in UEFI if needed. I'll reinstall windows a few times, no problems.
