CPU to Graphics Rule of Thumb?

Post by Jassifrickanation »

I've done a lot of research on what is the best way to upgrade a computer for gaming. With a lot of this research, I found mixed opinions.

The general idea is that the graphics card should be half the cost of the machine. However, I was curious if there's a different rule of thumb to go by in order to find a better solution.

Like, right now, I'm running with an FX 6100, ASUS M5A97 R2.0, 8 GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM (running at 1600 MHz), and a Geforce GTX 560 Ti. I'm wondering, what kind of video card would I have to aim for before it starts to bottleneck at other components of my machine? I spent about $310 on the processor, cooler, motherboard, case, and memory in the past year. Does that mean I should aim for a video card retailing in the $250-350 range? Not sure I'm really going to upgrade the video card soon as it is, but I was curious what I should keep in mind if I were to do so.

Also, I'M NEW HERE!!! WEEE!!! How do ya do? :3 I've used CoreTemp a while... I quite like it... Yes... gewd...

Welcome to the forum!
I haven't been much into gaming lately, but I think that your CPU is plenty fast for most of the games out right now.
So you could probably get an HD 7870 or even HD 7950 for that budget.

I think that places like ocforums and xtremesystems forum would be a better place to ask for a recommendation.

Alright. Thanks for the input. :D And the welcome. :P I had been investigating a 7870 and similar video cards. Though, when doing some investigating and testing, I kinda came across a couple things. I'll make another topic later, but it involved CoreTemp, Prime95, and a voltage increase. I would make it now, but I want to do a little more testing and I'm not on the PC right now that I'm overclocking so I don't have all the details (the computer can still boot, I'm just not at home).

Thanks again for the response. :D
