cpu swaps

Post by ZigZag03 »

what are the ramifications of pulling out a cpu and installing a different one, assuming socket and bios compatability? does the os care? should it happily go forward and run, only faster, if a faster cpu is dropped in with no other changes?

As long as you apply a fresh coat of thermal paste (and clean the old one from the heatsink) and the heatsink is rated for the new CPUs power output everything should go just fine.
In some rare cases, if you install a CPU with more cores or replace a CPU without hyperthreading with one that has HT, you might run into an issue where Windows doesn't pick up the new cores/threads.
In that case you can read section #5 of the FAQ for simple solutions.
