FX-6350 Temp Settings Question

Post by punster »

I upgraded my cpu from a phenom II 965 Black Edition to an FX-6350 processor. The Phenom, not overclocked, would run between 102F and 115F when running games. Using the same MB, an MSI 970 with the FX-6350, Coretemp is showing temps between 65 and 95F. I'm using a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler. I expected this to run hotter but it seems to be running a lot cooler. Should this be the case?

It's possible for a new processor to run cooler than an old one, since you usually get new parts (or clean your old ones well before reusing them). Such as a heatsink or the case.
Also make sure that you add a 10-15C offset to Core Temp, you may have had it already set on the Phenom system and forgot about it. Core Temp usually under reports on AMD CPUs, it's explained in the FAQ.

Which FAQs ? I checked the one at the top of the forums but its only FAQs about the forums

Also, 10-15c offset, is that for all FX chips? (8350)

I read once coretemp reaches 40c~ the temps are generally accurate without offset, only <40c are inaccurate, is this correct ?

If so, when I have been running P95, and no offset in coretemp, I've seen in excess of 65c, does this mean I have been reaching almost 80c ?

Core Temp FAQ.

The FX processors, like all of the previous AMD CPUs (After the A64s) do not report the 'absolute' temperature of the core, but an offset.
In most of my tests, this offset is usually between 10 and 20C.
