It is a mess right now. I believe CPUZ vcore meter is broken, it goes all around the place, it reports vdroop as vboost and CPUZ crashes the system if you let it running for more than 10min.

HWinfo and HWmon are the ones that seem to report things properly. Specially HWinfo in my experience.

The registers in which the temperature, TjMax and the TDP values are stored in are different from the previous generations. Therefore, current code won't work, and there's no mention of where that information is. They don't explain how to monitor boosted performance states either.
If you had a processor/system to test, what software would you use to read the sensor data from the chip? I'm sure there would be many in this thread who would download whatever software you would use, and then upload a report/export generated from the software..

I may be looking at this problem wrong, but let me know. I'd be willing to help do what I can to assist you :)

I wouldn't go as far as vcore being broken, it's just the way things are handled on a Ryzen is so dynamic, that a VID of a certain value doesn't necessarily mean that the vcore will be the same or even close to that. There are multiple voltage domains in the chip, there are built in voltage regulators on die, capable of reducing voltage to certain parts of the chip to conserve power. It's also not that transparent.
From what I read most of the voltages on the current systems is still handled by the motherboard, so maybe CPUz simply doesn't support the IO chip on the board, and thus displays the VID value, which could be inaccurate.

But yes, I agree that things are a mess right now. I don't see how AMD not releasing any documentation is a good thing for them. I sent an email requesting more documentation, but that will require me to sign an NDA with them, and I'm not sure they'll agree to do that.

Do you think they would want to hold on that information. I doubt it. I assume AMD likes to be backed by the community unless they plan to release their metering suite

Core Temp can read whatever data or sensor in the CPU I tell it to, the problem is that without proper documentation from AMD, it can be hard to impossible to find where the values we're looking for are or how they are calculated, this stuff isn't always just there to take it, sometimes there's a special sequence of operations that needs to be performed to retrieve a usable value.

I don't know what their reasons are. BIOS and Kernel Developer's Guide (BKDG) is almost always necessary to properly add support for AMD products, it seems that this time around, or maybe just right now, it's only available to whoever signed an NDA with AMD. I know there has always been a public release of BKDG, even if sometimes it was somewhat limited and missing some information.

hopefully they're preparing the info but is probably a long piece of paper that needs to be revised exhaustively.

I see dynamic meters in the AI suite and CPUZ vcore. Yet in HW info everything is pretty stable so I don't know who to believe but when I was testing LLC levels and watching the vcore numbers in HWinfo all seemed pretty consistent and again, no ping pong on those numbers, pretty stable and predictable.

Re: AMD Ryzen Support

Post by Saccosvd »

I wrote this in another forum some days ago:

I strongly believe CPUz is broken, as much as the AI suite in my PRIME X370 PRO

I'll explain:

CPUZ: The reading is all over the place. With an OC of 4Ghz at 1.35V I get 1.330V, 1.319V, 1.36V, 1.4V...it jumps endlessly at idle...at load it shows 1.373V

HWInfo: 1.35V constant Vcore reading (not moving at all) and 1.327V vdroop with an LLC Level 3.

In fact, if we substract 1.35V from 1.373V (CPUZ reading at load) the difference is 0.023

If we substract 0.023V from 1.35V it gives you the right vdroop reported my HWInfo (1.327V)

So I believe CPUZ is reading the vdroop with a positive number, which appears as a vboost. (it did that with every LLC from 1 to 3)

In fact CPUZ is so broken it crashed my system (which is pretty darn stable) after 10min running while posting this, and I had to write it all again. (CPUZ will not crash your system if you load it and close it after say 1min)

Please leave CPUZ running for at least 2omin and see if you get a system crash. (black screen)

Look at this. Someone got the vcore number with a multimeter and compared to CPUZ

Not showing real temperature

Post by ZeHgS »

Hello! I'm not sure whether it's a bug or what, but, for some reason, the program does not seem to be showing the real temperature. I have attached a print screen. It worked normally on my laptop, why is it different on my desktop? The computer is new and the processor is a Ryzen 7 1700, and the motherboard an AB350M-D3H.

Thanks a lot!

I did, thanks. The PPR doesn't contain the necessary data for temperature and TDP.
The BKDG for Family 15h is irrelevant for the Ryzen CPUs.

Thanks guys. I got the information I was missing this evening, and will work on getting things done, hopefully, this week.
The dumps have helped, but to test the temperature detection it'll have to be done on a physical system.
Once I have a beta\test version ready, I'll shoot everyone a PM to try it out.

It seems that Ryzen CPUs only have a single thermal sensor, similar to previous AMD processors.
They no longer report TjMax nor TDP values, therefore those fields will not be populated.

Works here, however I can't see all cores temps in the window, only in the taskbar if i enable them all, and they're all the same, i assume each core should have a different temp.

Also all the multipliers are the same and here I'm using P-states and I see each core multiplier changes in HWinfo.

So far so good, at least is working now.
