Autostart Core Temp with Windows 7 as normal user?

Post by Danick »

Hi guys,

I am having trouble starting Core Temp (0.99.7.7) automatically in a Windows 7 Professional x64 System as a standard user using the task scheduler.
The UAC keeps popping up with an orange box and asks for the Admin-Password.

Quick description of the system:
Windows 7 Professional (x64)
Admin-user: "A"
Standard-user: "S"

I followed the guide "Autostart Core Temp with Windows 7 & Vista - Guide" and searched for solutions with different search engines, but nothing solved the problem while using a standard-user account, in which Core Temp should be in the sys-tray showing the core-temperature.

Core Temp has been set up using the Admin-user "A"
a) using the Installer
b) putting the files into a directory not controlled by Windows (mentioned in some solutions - a dir like User/%UserName%/MyStartupApps)
c) changing the directory-permissions to full access for the standard-user "S"

Enabling/disabling the Core Temp-setting "Start Core Temp automatically"

As mentioned in the tutorials, CoreTemp has to be run by the Task Scheduler. For admin-accoutns, the solutions worked, but as standard user, the best case is when the UAC popps up and asks for the admin-password.

Some settings are not possible.
If I use the standard user to set up the task, it is not possible to use "for all users" for the trigger "log on".
As standard user, I am not able to set up a task using an admin-account and setting "run with highest privileges".
Setting up the task with the admin, Core Temp does not start with the standard-user or does not show up in the system tray.

Does anybody have a step-by-step-solution for this problem or is this unsolvable?

Thanks in advance for any hint.
Danick

There is no way to start Core Temp as a standard user in any case, you will need to enter Admin user/pass credentials, even when starting it manually.
I haven't been able to figure out a way to do what you want.

Hello again :P

I was afraid it would be that way but wasn't sure as my experience with Windows 7 is still at beginner-level.
Hoped that I made mistakes in following the guides

Thank you very much for "solving" my question.

Here's a quote from the FAQ explaining the problem:
Why does Core Temp require administrator privileges to run?
Core Temp requires direct access to hardware to be able to read temperature and other processor information.
In Windows you can only access hardware using a kernel mode driver. Since Core Temp doesn't install anything permanent on your system, it loads the driver at run time, this task requires administrator rights to achieve.

hi guys,

I got a (little bit intricate) solution:

1. Download 7APL. -> http://programming-designs.com/projects/7apl/
2. Create a profile with CoreTemp.exe
3. Choose your hotkey to launch your profile with
4. Create a macro with your admin password (i've got a g11 keyboard, don't know how to Create macros:)
5. Press application hot key followed by macro hot key
6. There you go;)
