CPU Temp standards

Postby Lejanius » Mon Jun 29, 2015 1:34 am

I just build a new PC. I have built numerous PCs in the past but it has been 10 years since my last build.

I am running a
AMD FX6300 on an Asus M5A78L-M motherboard. I have 16 GB of RAM and a Sapphire dual X R9 280 video card with 3 GB of DDR5 RAM. It has a 500W power supply and two fans.

I know a lot about PCs but not a ton about cooling. My temperatures idle around 18-20C and under loads I run around 40-50C. My TJMax reads at 83c

My question is, I frequently spike temps in the high 60c and low 70c when under a full load. I have hit 79c a few times, but nothing higher. I would say I hover around the high 50s and low 60s most of the time, but I have no idea what is normal and if the spikes are something to be worried about.

One thing about my build is my case is somewhat small. I feel I get good airflow with a front and back fan on the case but I hate to shorten the life of the build. Long ago I never worried about heat much (not sure why, ignorance probably) but I am curious if I should be worried. I have been running fine with no issues for about two weeks now.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Usually FX processors report temperatures about 10-20C lower than the real core temperature, due to the way AMD implemented the sensors in these chips.
I would say that 60-70C for full load is quite high, but probably not really life threatening for your system. I would recommend to look into improving cooling.
See if you can perhaps improve your cable management, upgrade the thermalpaste and perhaps the CPU cooler itself. On the other hand FX processors are quite power hungry, and it could simply be a limitation of the small case you used for the build.
