I've just been made aware that MS is no longer supporting Windows 7 Gadgets and is advising users to remove their gadgets for security reasons. Is this a recent event? What's the word from Core Temp developer(s)? Is Core Temp subject to the same attack method? Has it been ruggedized against the threat that other gadgets are subject to?

Core Temp gadget is basically an interface for a .Net module, so it should be pretty secure. It only access 2 pages online which are both on www.alcpu.com (one to check for updates and one to check for 'news')
As far as I am aware there shouldn't be any security issues with it.
