CPU temperature

Post by wheetleya »

How does a CPU temperature monitor software know the correct temperature? I think a sensor should read an accurate temperature of the CPU or the HDD. I don't think computers have a temperature sensor because the software is for every computer. So, is the value shown accurate?

For Intel and as far as I know, VIA processors, it is pretty accurate.
There are thermal sensors built into the CPU core itself, and this is where Core Temp is pulling its data from.
In the case of AMD chips, they were pretty accurate in the original Athlon64 era. In Phenoms and derivatives, you usually have to add a 15C offset to get correct values. With APUs, I still haven't figured out completed.
