CoreTemp and Kaspersky

Post by cindabalog »

I have been using CPU Temp for years. Had no issues with it, and absolutely love it.

However, something strange started happening. All of a sudden Kaspersky pops up with its red warning box.

"Suspicious Driver Installation"
Process (PID:1116:)
"c\program files\CORE TEMP\TEMP.EXE"

CPU Temperature and System Information utility from group "Low Restricted" was trying to download driver in a hidden way.

I do hope this is just a false positive.

This is indeed a false positive.
Core Temp comes with a kernel mode driver packed into the executable, it unpacks and loads it when you run it.
The design objective of this was to make it portable, a single file, just double click and go.
The driver is required to obtain access to the CPU and other parts of the machine for Core Temp's features.

Thanks for the reply. And that was what I was wondering and felt. Never had any issues with Coretemp before.

And, to keep you updated on this, Kaspersky did come back with another window, saying there is no threat, and is safe to restore it.

Thanks,
Cinda
