Coretemp CPU speed does not match BIOS settings

Post by Bloodthorne »

Hi folks,

I'm overclocking my PC currently instead of upgrading, i've never overclocked anything before so im asking a lot of people questions, but one arose from the use of CoreTemp.

Firstly my hardware:
Gigabyte P35-DS4
Core2Quad Q6700
2 x 2 gigabyte RAM

When I tested my CPU, coretemp reads everything fine. However, i noticed that during maximum stressing with Prime95, my CPU speed according to Coretemp didnt go over 2134 MHz. This is weird because it should be at the factory defaults of 2.66 GigaHertz (opposed to now 2.13 GigaHertz).

So i figured my Bios settings somehow changed. I went in the Bios to change it, but the core speed is set at 333 MHz with the multiplier at 8, getting me the 2.66 GigaHertz.
CoreTemp says it's at 266 MHz x 8.

I've not yet increased or lowered the speed, i did increase the multiplier to 9, to see for it's effect. When stressing at x9 multiplier, i get 2400 MHz.

Which of these speeds is correct? The one mentioned in BIOS or the one CoreTemp reads out. And if CoreTemp is correct, why is it displayed wrong in my BIOS?

Thanks for your time!

Minor update:

Installed CPU-Z to check if the values of CoreTemp are correct.

They are: CPU-Z and CoreTemp give the same CPU speed, unlike my BIOS.

Anyone got an idea what the issue is?

I'm not sure which setting you have there in your BIOS, but your processor's default speed is 266x10.
333x8 should still work, as the multiplier is unlocked downward, and most motherboards shouldn't have any problems with the 333MHz FSB speed.

For some reason my processor was running at 8 x 266.

The multiplier was set to 8 and while the CPU frequency was at 333 in the bios, my memory speed was 1066.

the memory multiplier was on auto, but after fiddling with that, it must have been on 4.0 multiplier. Which would force a 266 MHz CPU frequency.

It's my best bet, not quite sure tbh. I'm asking around for OCing advice, but people dont seem to understand my questions.

I would start with resetting BIOS settings to see if you can get your stock frequency working correctly.
Only then lower the multiplier, and up the FSB (leave memory on auto), in small increments and see if there's a difference.
