Different versions/report big differences in temps??

Post by jimdot »

I have attached 2 screen shots here for you to look at. I am running an AMD FX-8150 CPU, Win 7/64bit, G.Skill memory at 1866MHz. The difference in temps being reported between Core Temp 0.99.8 and what is being reported by Core Temp 1.0 is quite a bit different! So which version is telling me the truth? I thought I was running in the cool 20c's at idle & then when I upgraded to v1.0 it suddenly says I'm up in to the 40c's at idle,,, Huh??? Also in the screen shot for ver 1.0 under temp readings, how can min. be greater than max??

I'm puzzeled & don't know what to belive or what is accurate. Can you enlighten me please??

Thanks in advance,
Jim

That's very interesting indeed.
I'd say that 1.0 is more accurate as it's an updated version which supports other newer AMD CPUs.
But if you run 1.0 and 0.99.8 side by side, you see the same difference?
Could you please attach a register dump from both versions (tools menu) so I can check?

Same here with an i5 2500K

Core Temp 0.99.5 showed 60-70 degrees for the i5. Offsets all set to zero. Ouch!
I just installed the latest Core Temp (1.0, 64 bit) and it now gives temperatures are around 30 degrees.

I've tried another monitor and that shows around 30 degrees in line with core Temp 1.0.
So the odds are that the lower temperatures are correct (phew!)

Now Core Temp was installed when I had a Dual core Pentium.
Lazily I then just plugged the discs into a new Z68 Motherboard with the i5 2500K. Amazing it worked at all.

So I think these monitoring programs set themselves up for specific processors.
I.e. the Windows Hal does not provide a standard platform for reading temperatures.

0.99.5 is outdated, and didn't support the Sandy Bridge CPUs, so it's no surprise.
It was probably just displaying distance to TjMax rather than the actual temps, and that's why the numbers were so high.

That is fine.
I didn't mean to be critical, just curious, and the explanation fits.
Core Temp stays in my System tray!
Many thanks
