Great utility, THANKS! but what is my TjMax??

Post by hot blooded »

Thank you thank you for the freeware!! My machine has been overheating recently when I play a certain demanding game. My system just plain shuts completely off suddenly when it gets too hot. I'll consider adding a second cooling fan.

But in the mean time I find Core Temp useful for tracking the difficulty. But I still don't know what temperature my processor core is designed to shut off at, or what the manufacturer's recommended operating range is. I don't see this information on any Core Temp display. And I tried using the "Advanced" feature where you can tell the app to "display the distance to TjMax", but that isn't working or something. The only thing it affects is when I mouse hover over the system tray icon, and it simply adds the phrase "to TjMax" to what the core temp is.

But the program does indicate on it's main display panel what my TCaseMax is: 69 degrees C.

Perhaps mine is one of those processors where a TjMax is not given or applicable. Mine is an AMD Sempron 2600+ (Palermo), according to this app.

So I wonder what would consist of the critical temperature for the core, both for recommended range and at what temp system shut-down is being triggered. I guess the system shutdown from overheating is a hardware-implemented thing, eh??

Again, many many thanks!!

[Edit: my TCaseMax is exceeded frequently, with no obvious effect]
[Edit: I meant, the core temp frequently exceeds the TCaseMax]

[Late edit: according to a chart I found on the Web, AMD Sempron maxes out around 90-95 degrees C]

AMD has never released TjMax values for its desktop processors up until the Phenom CPU, so there is no way to know what the real TjMax rating is.
Of course the TCaseMax doesn't represent the maximum core temperature rating, so I understand how that can sometimes be confusing.
In desktop AMD CPUs the rule of thumb dictates to have the temperature at or below 60c when in full load. My Athlon64 X2 3600+ runs close to that at idle and even close to 70c when under load and everything seems to be OK with it.
