Athlon II x2 245 (Regor)

Post by Gideon »

Hello,

First of all, let me say thank you for a wonderful tool. Well done.

I recently upgraded a computer for a friend of mine, replacing both the motherboard (Asus M2N68-AM Plus) and CPU (listed in Subject). I have one 2GB stick of DDR-2 RAM installed. Everything is working beautifully, but I noticed that CoreTemp version 0.99.8 is showing the clock frequency at varying rates. Is this an adaptive CPU? Does it down-clock at lower loads? If so, I didn't notice reading anything to support that theory. If down-clocking is not the case, am I witnessing a bug in CoreTemp? I extracted the top CoreTemp folder to the programs folder in Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. If there is any other info I can provide, please let me know. I tell every I know about this gadget, keep up the good work!

Thank you,

Gideon

This is a power saving feature, it's called Cool 'n Quiet on AMD processors.
The CPU frequency is reduced, the minimum is usually 800MHz, and the voltage is also lowered to conserve power when the processor is not under heavy loads.
Googling about this should give you plenty of information on how it works if you want to dig a little deeper.

Hello,

Thanks for clearing that up. The motherboard driver / app CD must have installed it when I chose the "install everything including the kitchen sink" option. When I build a rig for myself, I usually do not install that software. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
