Intel i7 Q720 - wrong amount of cores and threads

Post by webdev »

Hi everyone,

I just installed Core Temp 64 on my new Dell Studio 15 (Win 7 64). It has an Intel Core i7 Q720 CPU with four generic cores and eight threads. Unfortunately Core Temp only recognizes two cores and four threads. Please have a look at the attached screen shot. If you compare the information from the device manager listing and the Core Temp dialog you'll see it:

According to the website all i7 cores are supported so I can't explain this problem. If anyones knows how to fix this please let me know. Otherwise this must be considered a bug...

Thanks in advance

Thank you for the quick reply!

The dump is about 70 KB so I'll link it here instead of making it a huge post...

Hope this helps!

Could you tell me how many processors you see in the Task Manager?
From the dump, Core Temp should be able to pick up all 8 logical processors.
But if the OS only picks up 4, Core Temp will be fooled into thinking the CPU is a 4 thread and not a real 4 core CPU.

I'm not exactly sure but did you mean the TaskMan -> Performance-Tab?

Image

There it says 4 cores and that is right afaik... If Win detects these four Core Temp should be able to detect temperatures for all of them, right?

Anyway - great program btw. I'm just curious if the other two temperatures are as high as #0 and #1.

That's the one I am talking about. And that doesn't look right to me unless you have turned off Hyperthreading.
If Hyperthreading is enabled then you are not using all available cores on your CPU.

You're supposed to see 8 graphs in there.

Your last comment caused a lot of searching but I finally figured it out. Since I have a Dell laptop the BIOS didn't give me an opportunity to switch on/off hyperthreading so I started wondering what else could affect this setting. I started looking through the different dialogs and msconfig finally solved the problem or well ... caused it I'd rather say. So for everyone else expieriencing this kind of trouble: [Win] + [R], msconfig [Enter], -> Start -> Advanced options -> DEACTIVATE Number of processors.

That's it, now Windows should use the max. cores / threads available. This decreased the video encoding time by one third - nice! :D
Additionally - and that's what got me started on the whole issue - Core Temp is now displaying four cores and eight threads!

So once again: thanks for your help, amazing piece of software you have created. I'll spread the word.

P. S.: Maybe this is worth some kind of faq entry or something like that to avoid more guys like me coming to this place and posting the same problem...

I'm glad to hear that you solved the issue.
I've actually started working on a FAQ today, I'll include this problem in the FAQ.
