Win 8.1 Shows only cores for 1st processor (O/S problem)

Post by DaddyM0E »

Having looked through the FAQ's and some posts, I realized that it is Windows itself that is causing my issue. Still, I thought it would be useful to post what I have found and, upon finding a "fix", return with that information to help others with the same problem. Again, this is *NOT* a problem with the CoreTemp software, but, rather an issue with Windows 8.1 instead since it was working just fine and dandy in Windows 7 showing both processors and all 8 cores.

Windows 8.1 64-bit standard (upgraded from win-7 ultimate 64-bit)
.NET 3.5 installed
Gadgets enabled and working
BIOS shows both quad-core processors as active
CoreTemp 1.0 RC6 (64-bit)
Dual processors, Intel Xeon X5355 quad-core(Clovertown)
Device manager shows all 8 cores
-----and now for the parts that show me that Windows 8.1 is the culprit-----
MSCONFIG /boot /advanced only shows four processor maximum selection possible (I have it unchecked as per the FAQ's)
Windows System Info only shows *one* of the two quad-cores.

So, even though the device manager shows 8 cores (4 for each processor), Windows 8.1 is only showing or allowing one single processor.
This is my first post, if I missed something, just let me know.

As far as I know Windows 8.1 standard only supports a single CPU socket. You'll have to upgrade to a "higher-end" version of windows which has multiprocessor support.
Main rig:
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (True Spirit 140 Direct) / Mobo: Asrock Fatal1ty X470 / EVO 970 500GB + WD Blue 250GB + HDD / GPU: Dell RX 570 4GB / Mem: 2x16GB DDR4-3200 G.Skill 32GTZKW TridentZ - 32GB total / PSU: Seasonic Prime Ultra Gold 650W
NAS:
Core i7 2600K 3.4GHz @ 4.3GHz (Scythe Mugen2) / Mobo: Biostar TP67XE / 2x Inland Pro 120GB + HDDs / GPU: ATi Mach64 VT2 / Mem: 4x4GB DDR3-1600 G.Skill 8GBXL RipJawsX - 16GB total / PSU: Seasonic S12II 620W.
Secondary rigs:
Core i3 7130U / MiniPC / SanDisk SDSSDP-128G / GPU: Intel HD 620 / Mem: 1x8GB DDR3L-1600
Xeon X3430 2.40GHz @ 3.06GHz or Core i3 540 3.06GHz @ 4.0GHz (Freezer 7 Pro) / Mobo: MSI H55M-ED55 / PNY CS1111 240GB / GPU: ATI FirePro V3800 / Mem: 4x2GB DDR3-1600 G.Skill 4GBRL RipJaws - 8GB total / PSU: Seasonic S12II 620W
AMD Phenom II X4 B93 / Mobo: ASUS M2A-VM / GPU: ATI Radeon Xpress X1250 / Crucial M4 120GB / Mem: 2x2GB DDR2-800 - 4GB total / PSU: Antec 380W.

Thank you for your quick response. You are also 100% correct. The Standard version of 8.1 will only *USE* 1 (one) physical processor, be it singe, dual, or quad-core, etc. no matter how many other physical CPU's you have on your motherboard. They nerfed it through the operating system itself. Having said that, the Windows 8.1 Pro version will support up to 2 (two) physical processors. Microsoft seems to have placed some sort of a "gag-order" on speaking about this on their site and throughout TechNet as you will find it terribly difficult to get any results about the multi-processor / multi-core question except to be redirected to their Windows Server support, which, by the way, has changed their licensing to a "pay-per-CPU" system. One Server license will cover 2 (two) CPU's. If you have a big rig that runs, say, 6 (six) quad-core processors, you have to purchase 3 (yes, three) licenses to get it running. Okay, enough ranting. Here's the link to the page I found to be the most helpful in explaining this.

http://superuser.com/questions/495105/h ... -8-support

Note that Microsoft *does* let the user know, as per the posted linked page, through the EULA, how many CPU's it will support, and, having done their legal duty to inform the user, have remained quite silent otherwise considering the number of people asking this very question.

[Takes a deep breath, let's it out slowly......]

Okay, now, looks like its time to upgrade to Pro if I want to see my machine rockin' again.
