Core Temp reads max on laptop wake.

Post by Deaddard Stark »

I'm running Core Temp 1.0 RC6 for Windows 8.1 64 bit. My laptop is an ASUS with an i5 3337u (Ivy Bridge). The Tj. Max for my laptop is 105, however I have core temp set to start a 120 shut down timer at 90 degrees.

Three times in the last month or two, upon waking my laptop from sleep, the 120 second timer box has been on my screen with core temp reading exceptionally high load (90% and above) on both cores, and the temperature at exactly 105 for both. However every time this has happened the underside of my laptop, both around the vent and on the underside has been ice cold, same as ambient temperature. I haven't experienced any kind of hardware failure either. After clicking on the button to extend the time limit, the core temp box appears to reset and the temperature and load return to what I'd expect, eg around 10% load or lower, and about 30 degrees.

Is this reading accurate, or is it a bug with core temp, and if so, how do I solve it?

Many thanks,

Craig.

It is an elusive problem. I had similar reports once in a while, but without any consistency or ways for me to reproduce and debug them.
- Have you tried restarting Core Temp after this occurs, and does it help?
- Could you try other tools that read core temperature and see how they behave in a similar situation?

Restarting is never needed, merely clicking to extend the time causes the display to reset and the readings to normalise :) I've not found any real commonality between reports, except for maybe the length of time? If memory serves, each time it has occurred has been when my laptop has been asleep for a few hours, ie I've just left it and gone to do something else for a while. However the bug doesn't occur every time I do so.

I would try some other programs, but considering how infrequently it happens, and me having no sure fire way to replicate it, the chance of me getting any data for it any time soon is slim! :')

Good to know it's probably a bug and not an accurate reading, that was my main worry :)
