Gadget failes under Windows 8 Pro

Post by Mark Phelps »

Am running Core-temp and the gadget (2.7) under Win7 Pro just fine.

Installed Win8 Pro 32-bit, and although core-temp app runs just fine (displays temps in tray area), when launching the gadget, it displays an error about not finding the Library.

Also, although this is not YOUR problem, I ran the ALL CPU Meter gadget (which I used in Win7 until the Core Temp gadget came out), and it has an option to read temps from Core Temp, but when I select that, it says Core Temp is not running -- even though I see the temps in the system tray.

So, it Core Temp not running under Win8 and known limitation?

Thanks

Do you have the RTM build of 8? Last I checked Windows 8 Final doesn't support Desktop Gadgets anymore.
For your particular problem, you will have to install/enable .Net 3.5 on your system for the gadget to work.

No, I'm not running the RTM version.

As to gadgets working, there are patches that you can apply involving copying over the gadget-related components from Win7 -- and that works. I have all of my old gadgets back and Core-Temp is the only one that does not work.

What more info do you need me to provide?

Yes, gadgets are still there in the Beta version of 8, that's why I asked.
As I said you need to install .Net 3.5 and the gadget will work.

OK, did that -- and it works. But ... folks need to know that it's a major PAIN to get that installed in Win8. The usual Add Windows Features feature does NOT work -- fails with an error code. Fortunately, MS knows about this and by clicking the error, you get a set of instructions that shows how to add the feature from the install media -- but -- that means you're NOT going to be able to do this on a preinstalled Win8 box because there is NO install media available.

Just letting you know because there are a LOT of us on the Windows 8 forums (eightforums.com) that like our Win8 to look like Win7, including running our old gadgets. So, you're likely to see more posts about this problem over time.

Good to hear that you have got it sorted out, I'd appreciate the links that helped you sort the problem out quickly and painlessly.
I will consider adding instructions for the gadget on Win8, but since it's not officially supported, I don't know how many people will actually bother with installing 3rd party packages or messing with their system and Win7 files to get it working on Win8.

Sorry, don't have the links.

One of the really few good things about Win8, as that when you have a problem doing system stuff (like adding features), instead of just barfing with some useless error code, Win8 provides a link in the window you can check and it then displays a page from MS that has workaround instructions! Yeah, you could do this before, but you had to search for the workarounds. Now, they just appear for you.

As to folks using Gadgets, don't have any numbers, but the Windows 8 forum is rapidly polarizing into three groups: those that LOVE the new Start Screen (and bash anyone who doesn't), those that hate Win8 (period), and those (like me) that have heavily customized Win8 to look and behave much like Win7. It's the last bunch that is interested in continuing to use gadgets.

Thanks for this. I had same issue just now with my windows 8 install and using 8gagetpack to run my gadgets. I have just installed .net 3.5. Here is a link that will help in doing this.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh506443.aspx

Gotta restart my pc now to make sure it works. As long as you dont hear back from me assume it does. I'm bout positive it will as I had this gadget working before I did a fresh install.

EDIT:

Just wanted to say that this DID work and it even fixed a few of my other gadgets that were having problems also. Thanks again.

My experience with this is I had to install/enable .NET 3.5 first, then install the gadget or the gadget will not install.
So after install/enable .NET 3.5, install Core Temp, install Core Temp gadget it then worked correctly.
"All CPU Meter" was mistakenly used since Core Temp gadget was not installing. The gadget must say "Core Temp". If it's not there then it didn't install.
