RC3 - System Tray Icons Still Not Functioning Properly

Post by dezzo »

It was said before that the issue with the system tray icons not working properly would be fixed in the next release.
Now I have just installed RC3 only to find out that the system tray icons are still not working properly.

I have the Load and Frequency Icons also turned on. I have configured Windows not to hide any of the Core Temp icons, yet after restarting Core Temp the icons are again hidden.

I have not used RC3 long enough to determine yet if the icons will be completely missing after a reboot, as in the RC2 version, however it appears so far as though nothing has been corrected.

RC3 solves the problem with the icons completely missing, which occurs mostly when Windows is starting.
When the icons appear, but simply hidden, and you have to click "Show hidden icons" triangle to see them, then this is simply a Windows taskbar setting and not a problem with Core Temp.

RC3? Must've just been put up. I will try it to see if the tray info works properly now.

Not quite. If I set it to display all cores, I get three of my four cores. That is the case even if I display CPU load and frequency. As soon as I switch to highest temp per processor or highest temp, the temp disappears completely. And this is true whether I am displaying load and frequency .. or not.

Or so I thought. It seems that every time I changed what was displayed, the behavior setting re-set to notifications only. Presently, I am displaying the highest temp, load and frequency. And switching to all cores displays my four cores, load and frequency. I do notice that the order is one core, load, frequency and then the other three cores ...

I'll see what happens when shutting down and restarting, but as of right now it seems to be working properly with respect to tray display.

Hi,
I was about to post a similar issue now that I've updated to 1.0. When I was running 0.99.8 I had no issues with the icons. I normally had it configured to show the highest temp, clock and load. After updating to 1.0, I rarely get all 3 in the tray. I normally get temp and clock and load doesn't show up and when it does, it's not next to the other two. On my laptop, occassionally, the icon "holder" is there but no icon shows up, so where the icon would be is "empty" space with no icon but if I move the mouse over it, it shows the Core Temp tool tip.

This only happens on start up, so I have to manually exit and restart which defeats the point of automatically starting up. I tried disabling Aero just to see if that makes a difference and it does not. I'm on Win7U64. Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks.

Make sure that you updated Core Temp to RC3 (will say 1.0 RC3 in the title).

I saw RC3 but thought 1.0 was the latest version. I figured RC3 was the last Release Candidate before 1.0. I guess not. Anyhow, I'm now using RC3 and it's working as it should for the configuration I'm using of 1 temp (highest), clock and load. Thank you.

Even after configuring Windows to NOT hide any of the Core Temp icons, some of them will indeed later become hidden.
I do not believe this is the fault of Windows. All other icons will remain visible when I configure them. The problem is only with the Core Temp icons.

There is definitely something seriously wrong with the way Core Temp displays the system tray icons.
Configuring Windows to "show icon and notifications" for all the Core Temp icons does not work in most cases. Some of the icons will become hidden again soon after.

I just had an experience where I tried to unhide one of the icons, and even though I set it to "show icon and notifications" the icon still remained hidden. I have never had this problem on any install of Windows 7 before, with any of the dozens of system tray icons I've had on my system, so I believe it to be a Core Temp issue.

I've given up on using it for now.
I will keep an eye out for the next beta version though, and I will provide any required info to help diagnose the problem, but I just can't use Core Temp at this point.

I should note that this happens on several different computers.

If you can see the icons in the hidden tray, it means that Core Temp is doing its job. From the programming point of view, there is no distinction between it being Windows XP/Vista or 7, so for Core Temp it does not matter.
You have to unhide the icons from the system tray configuration, sometimes you may have duplicate icons there, which remained from a previous version of Core Temp, so I suggest you check it out again.

The behavior I've experienced (1.0 RC3, 64-bit on Windows 7) is that usually the icons appear fine in the system tray, but sometimes one or more of the temperature icons do not display, AND when this happens they also do not show up when selecting "show hidden icons." When this happens I verify that I didn't accidentally close CoreTemp instead of minimizing it (by verifying it still shows up in system processes). The missing icons are missing even when CoreTemp has not been minimized. Sometimes they all disappear and are nowhere to be found. To solve this, I go into CoreTemp settings and toggle the system tray icon settings, then close it out completely and restart it. There does seem to be an intermittent issue here. Funny thing is for months after using 1.0 RC 3 this problem did not occur. It suddenly started occurring over the past week for so - where randomly some icons would disappear and couldn't be found as a hidden icon.
