1.0 RC2 spins after resume, UI unresponsive

Post by mcg »

1.0 RC2 on Win7-64 clarkdale. Polling interval 3000ms, system tray highest temp only, win7 taskbar features disabled.

Installed RC2 yesterday. Today after resume from overnight sleep, CPU usage went immediately to 50% (one of two CPU cores running non stop). Task manager showed that Core Temp was the CPU hog. The tray UI was unresponsive -- no changes in tray temperature displayed, hovering over or clicking on the temperature icon in tray had no effect. Suspect a UI thread was stuck spinning. However, the Core Temp process was still performing "Other I/O", presumably the monitoring thread was still querying kernel info in the background. Had to kill Core Temp process from taskman and then restart it.

Never had this problem with 0.99.8 running on same machine/config for nearly a year.

I've tried sleep/resume a few times today without reproducing the problem -- will update if I see it happen again.

Also noticed that while my temp polling interval is set to 3000ms or even 5000ms, the taskman "Other I/O" for Core Temp shows around 250 I/Os per second. Perhaps it is not updating the UI as often, but it is still working madly in the background. I would much prefer lower overhead by less frequent polling, not just less frequent UI updates.

Happy to collect more info or test fixes.

Happened again today. Core Temp process racked up an hour and a half of CPU time before I noticed the loud fan.

A little more info this time. The tray icon WAS updating, and hovering over the try icon displayed the hover text, but clicking on the icon did nothing.

If there are any breakpoints you'd like me to set or additional info you'd like me to collect next time it occurs, please let me know.

EDIT: Happened again this morning, three mornings in a row. The temp icon shown in the tray is NOT updating (I was wrong about that yesterday above) -- the tray temp is frozen, but the tool tip (showing frozen temp reading, not real current temp) is shown when hover mouse over temp icon. Clicking on icon does nothing.

Using procexp.exe, it appears two Core Temp threads are busy, bouncing back and forth doing SleepEx calls furiously.

/edit: just checked other topics with the same condition.

pre-edit
I'm having the same issue with 1.0 RC2 (worked fine pre-1.0)
win 7 64bits; turion II m520; coretemp with all settings @default

Whatever i close the lid, coretemp becomes unresponsive and fully occupies one core.
Starting another instance of coretemp just creates another process, but still doesn't create a working UI
