Multiplier bugs in Core Temp 1.0 RC1

Post by DLz »

Hi to all! :)
I downloaded and installed the new version of core temp (I take this opportunity to thank the developers. All this time you gave one of the best tools for overclocking, thank you very much). My problem is that core temp does not read properly the multiplier of my cpu (i7 920 D0): core temp says that is 12x while it is 20x. What can I do? I would not like the temperatures are wrong. With the previous version did not have this problem.
Thanks! :)

I guess that your cpu has just throttled down if your at desktop , try firing something up to make it work and i'll bet it goes back upto 20 .

You right. I run prime95 ang multiplier goes up to 20. But when i stopped prime, the multiplier go down to 12. :(

The algorithm of frequency detection was updated in 1.0
In the Nehalem architecture there is no well defined way of reporting the current CPU multiplier, while still being able to report Turbo multipliers.
There are currently 2 available methods of doing things:

1) The new way; Core Temp now measures active CPU cycles, the active cycles indirectly translate into frequency.
When load on the CPU is low, very often you will notice the CPU running at the lowest multiplier available to it, x12 in your processor's case.
If you load the processor with something like Prime95 or a similar application, you will notice how the frequency will jump up.

2) The old way is decribed by the official Intel document:

Image

* PS: I also noticed that there is sometimes a bug where the bus speed is way off, usually pressing F5 to refresh it sorts it out.
I'm working on getting this fixed for the final release (this is still an RC).

I have the opposite problem. CoreTemp shows 29x(maximum) instead of 8 or 9.

I have a i5 SB 2410m.
I know that this is a little off topic but I've found another bug. The temperature isn't always correct. Sometimes is 100C(Tj Max) and my notebook is idle, sometimes is 0. After 3rd restart the program is showing the right temp.

Right now the frequency changes between 2.7 and 2.9 ghz. With CPU-Z I get 0.8.
I will come back after I will install Intel Turbo Boost Monitor to see if this changes frequency.

****
Well, nothing is changed, nor with the Prime95.
I have a screenshot to show you the BIG difference between Coretemp and Cpuz.

Multiplier bugs in Core Temp 1.0 RC1

With 1.0 Core Temp reports the multipliers directly from the CPU. It's different than what is described above for Nehalem.
Regarding the second bug. I'm looking into it.

On idle:
Core 1:
Thread 1- 2,7/2,9 ghz
thread 2- 2,7/2,9 ghz
Core 2: the same story

On full load both cores are at 2,9 ghz.

Could you install the intel turbo monitor tool and see what it says? This sounds a little strange.
Also does it also report this frequency when you are on the battery?

Intel turbo boost monitor show how the frequency changes in steps 2,1-2,3-2,4... but core temp doesn't change.

On battery Core temp showed exactly the same frequency as the Intel Monitor. So here is the problem

If I plugin the ac cable it's the same old story.

On battery, with high performance Coretemp shows the same numbers as Intel Monitor(from 2.0 up to 2.6)

This seems to make sense, though. Core Temp now uses CPU MSRs for multiplier detection, it should be rather accurate.

Hello-I also have a question about this issue-I also have a Intel Core i5 760 that is overclocked slightly to 3.36GHz-Not that high mind you. On the previous Core Temp .99 it showed the correct Frequency and Multiplier values like others here have said. Core Temp shows a frequency of 1440MHz and a Multiplier of 160x9. This is incorrect as I do have the program AIDA 64 and it shows the frequency correctly and the multiplier correctly.
The correct readings are 3360MHz and the Multiplier values are 160x21.

Is there a way to correct this with this computer set up?

Sorry if you have already explained this to others but I didn't see anything about this particular processor-other than the laptop version Sandy Bridge.

Thanks again for the work you do.

Re: Multiplier bugs in Core Temp 1.0 RC1

Post by The Coolest »

This is due to a new frequency detection algorithm.
I'm planning to change it back to the way it was in the earlier versions in RC2, so no worries.

I7 975 clock speed appears incorrect

Post by blues »

CoreTemp 0.98 showed what appeared to be correct clock speeds for my i7 975 XE chip at approx 3200 MHz [133 x 24] (give or take dependant on load).
CoreTemp 1.0 shows maximum 1600 MHz (133 x 12) at high loading. This value hardly moves even when I load the cpu using an Excel macro (runs for about 5 minutes on large 50 MB file) or serious Photoshop macro on large (500MB) file. During these events the core temperature may rise by 15-20 C.
CPU-Z has the core multiplier at 26 while CoreTemp 1.0 has the multiplier at 12. I have seen this understating of the multiplier now on three separate computers, 2 x i7 and 1 x i5 560M.
