Not displaying 8 threads on Intel i7-720

Post by Ultraflyer »

First off, I want to say that I think this can be a very useful program since I suspect I am overheating, especially if I can get it to display properly. I have read over the FAQ's and several posts, yet I can only see four of the eight threads on my Intel i7-720 processor. The "Performance" tab of task manager shows all eight, and I have even tried going into msconfig as suggested with no results. The CoreTempDump log does show 4 Cores and 8 Threads, so I am at a loss. Any idea's? I did try installing SpeedFan which does show all eight threads, but I apparently have a problem with this program also since it does not show any of the voltages or any of the fan info, just the processors.

Thanks! :D

Core Temp does not show the logical processors simply due to them having duplicate data, it would still produce the same reading that the real core produces.
The load level is averaged between the logical and physical cores per core.

:D Gee, Thanks!! I didn't understand how the core issue worked . Do you have an opinion on proper temperatures for this processor? I've seen it as high as 88C under minimal use (I'm not a gamer, only a multitasker at times), but don't know what happens when the computer locks up or shuts down (Computer is not set to shut down under any circumstance, I only use the screen saver at this point). Toshiba is no help at indicationg the proper temperature, but the processor list 100C as the tMax .

:) Thanks Again :) !!

You can see the maximum temperature rating in the TjMax field. When the CPU gets to this point it will start to throttle and reduce frequency and voltage to reduce the temps.
I guess that for a quad core laptop proper heat dissipation can be problematic, but 88-90c when idle is borderline overheating right there.
I think it should be able to idle at lower temps.
It also means that your CPU most likely throttles down very often when you do try to work on it and the temperature increases beyond the TjMax point.
The CPU has hardware protection against critical overheating where it simply cuts power to the system, but this usually happens at much higher temperature point than the TjMax. Usually just by throttling the CPU can retain an acceptable temp.
