Core Temp 0.99.8.0 crashing on startup

Post by pong »

My system is Windows 7 Home Premium (German) 32-bit on an Atom Z520 CPU.
When starting up a freshly installed Core Temp 0.99.8.0 Windows shows the "This Application has an error..." message.
The event viewer says the following (translated from German):

Code: Select all

Application error, Event-ID 1000
Name of the faulty application: Core Temp.exe, Version: 0.99.8.0, timestamp: 0x4ca7bca5
Name of the faulty module: ole32.dll, Version: 6.1.7600.16624, timestamp: 0x4c297c56
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Error offset: 0x000551ad
ID of the faulty process: 0x%9
Start time of the faulty application: 0x%10
Path of the faulty application: %11
Path of the faulty module: %12
Report code: %13
A previous version of Core Temp was working without problems just minutes before. The were no other updates to the system in between.
What do I have to change to get it running again?

Looks like an error in the ole32.dll file - A windows system file.
Try to delete the INI files and restart Core Temp.

I already tried that. CoreTemp created a new one and crashed before it could be seen (the same way as before).

This DLL is used for the Core Temp's Window classes, basically to enable to Windows 7 taskbar functionality.

Looking at the problem report, one can tell that the exception is "c0000005", which probably is "access denied".
I just can't see, what access would be denied.

Solved.
The culprit was an old version of Asus WebStorage.

I found in another forum (via google), that someone tried to create a recovery disk out of Windows 7 control panel and that failed with the infamous 0xc0000005 within ole32.dll.
His platform was an Asus EeePC just like mine.
His solution after talking with Asus was to install a newer version of AsusWebStorage.
As AsusWebStorage is part of the normal EeePC installation, I thought, I should give a chance to a new version of that service.
And voilá, that solved the problem.
I uninstalled AsusWebStorage completely after that, because I didn't use that service anyway and the free period would have ended soon, too.
The AsusWebStorage service seems to intefere with the services of ole32 somehow generally.
