AMD64 CPU's

Hi all.
I have a AMD64 3200 and a 3400. I want to swap to the 3400 but it seems to be approx 3/32" thinner than my 3200 and I cannot get my heatsink to go down that far and accordingly it overheats. It is definitely not touching the CPU as I have checked.
Is this normal?
The 3200 is a fat CPU with a large metal top. The3400 is very thinwafer type with the capacitors showing.
I suppose I could try altering the heatsink surround etc. but not convinced it will work.
Any ideas.
Thanks folks.
