AMD Phenom II X4 940 wrong temps with 0.99.3 and 0.99.4

Post by CoreTemp-User106 »

Hi there,

I'm getting wrong temp readings with CoreTemp. It's much too low, the MSI board sensor is getting near the correct temps (veryfied with IR thermometer).
Core Temp Versions 0.99.3 and 0.99.4 (x64) both are affected.

I made a screenshot showing a comparison of Core Temp vs. MSI Dual Core Center.

OS is Vista 64, board is MSI DKA790GX Platinum.

Can anyone affirm that issue...?

Hello and welcome.

Core Temp does not report actual processor temperature with K10 generation of chips. There is some specific offset that is unknown to us, so there's no way to report actual CPU temp at this time from the DTS sensor.

Ahh ok, thank you :)

I don't know whether it's helpful but after all I'd estimate the Offset to be somewhere between 17 and 20.

Hard to tell exactly, because mobo sensors in general are not very precise and my IR thermometer points to a few square milimeters of the Hetaspreader which are not covered by the heatsink.

ATM I reckon with a delta of +19 which seems to be a reliable value. It scales good with what the mobo sensor and IR thermo read, ending up in sligthly higher temps shown by CoreTemp when cpu is fully loaded.
I noticed exactly that effect with DTS readings vs. mobo readings with many other cpus.

As I read in the changelog, AMD proposes a delta of 21 for 65nm Brisbane CPUs. Maybe thats even the offset for K10s...? The range is very similar ;)

The 21C fix for Brisbanes was issued by AMD for "lmsensors", the Linux app for temperature and voltage monitoring.
So I implemented it as well in this release. It has nothing to do with Phenoms.
AMD doesn't give any hints to what this offset may be :(
