Intel e4300 @333x9
MSI P6N SLI-FI
eVGA GeForce 6600GT
2x1GB G.Skill ddr2-800 @4-4-3-5
WinXP Home SP2

I have noticed that the program crashes my computer at certain times, while at other times I can open and close the program without fault.

Core temp seems to crash when other things are running. For instance, having core temp as a startup program crashes every time for me. Alternatively, if I try to load core temp right as the computer is finishing loading windows, it crashes. Today, when I was installing nero, core temp caused another crash, at least I think it did. I say this because the system crash --> reboot sequence happened exactly as it has in the situations listed above.

When the cpu is not under load, I can open and close the program freely without problems.

my fix ?

Post by dj_octave »

Been having the same problem, my setup:
E6600
ASUS P5B
3GB Geil DDR2 800MHz 4-4-4-12
ASUS EN7950GT
XP PRO SP2

Initially i thought it might be an antivirus problem, because Kaspersky wouldn't even allow the asus utility programs to run( overclock and monitoring tools ). The strange thing is that Core Temp ran before, on the same machine, with no problems. I've been getting these crashes after a clean reinstall of XP. So... WTF ????
Strange as it may look, i managed to fix the problem by reflashing my BIOS.... :) i downloaded the same version form the asus site, and reflashed... no more crashes ever since. I thought it couldn't be hardware related, because it was ok before ( same version of Core Temp ), so i tried this as a last resort. I think you should give a shot at reflashing the BIOS, or upgrade to the latest version. Might solve the problem

That's an interesting solution. I know it's not a hardware problem as some people who have more than one OS installed reported that it works on one of the two Windows installations

I get those resets from Core Temp 0.95 too.
My system:
E4300 1800MHz @ 200X9
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 rev 3.3, Intel P965 Express Chipset, driver version 1.1.9.0 (not quite sure where I can see that). F11 BIOS version
Leadtek Winfast 8600GT, Nvidia 158.22 forceware driver
Kingston 667MHz 1GB X 2 (2GB total) @ 667MHz
Windows XP SP1

I this somehow helps.

Hello

Core Temp 0.94, SpeedFan 4.32 and EVEREST 4 shows bad L2 temperature
So i tried CT 0.95. It restarts
My config:
Abit AB9 Pro with C1 chipset revision
C2D E4300 (with O/C to 2.9GHz 1.325V, i tried also without O/C)
Corsair Twin2X 2x1GB 675 CL4 (Elpida) (I tried also on Goodram 2x1GB 667 CL5)
Palit 7600GS Sonic DDR3 450/1000 @ 560/1600
Amacrox Warrior AX-450PNF (FSP)
Hitachi DeskStar 7K160 160GB
Windows XP SP2

CT 0.95 worked without problems on old system (Win 2k SP4) but it was on old hard drive (Samsung 40GB 5400 rpm) on JMicron PATA.

Sorry for my english

C2D E6400 @ 2566 MHz (365x7, stock vcore, 16hs orthos stable)
2x1GB Supertalent DDR2-667 @ 800 4-4-4-12 1T 1.9v
MSI P6N SLI Platinum flashed with v1.34 beta BIOS
ECS 7600GT 580/750 @ 660/785
WD 160GB SATA2 8MB
DVDRW LG 18x
Hitachi 80GB ATA133 2MB
nLited XP SP2 (my own, not winUE nor other releases, homemade)

That's my rig... well, 0.94 works for me, it never gives me errors. 0.95 BSODs my rig as soon as I open it, either when OCed or not... It shows that BSOD someone posted before:

http://img442.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img3013om4.jpg

http://img442.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img3010no8.jpg

Hope that helps. I think TAT shows the real temps (they're usually 15-20° higher than 0.94, speedfan 4.32 or everest; I'm sure they're real 'cause I've read the C2D Temp guide @ THG forumz...), I might use it for the time till you fix coretemp.

Just a little update, nothing really encouraging yet...
I started digging through my VMware images, and stumbled on a WinXP + SP1 installation. which produced the same BSOD.

Image

I've tried basically disabling the whole program and it would still crash. I'm pretty lost. As its 4am right now I will continue digging around and see if I can get this to work properly when I have some more free time. It is just strange that on other VMWares, and both my windows installations it works flawless.

I have also I have recieved an email some time ago, from a user who digged somewhat deeper than we have in these threads. He found out that what causes the crash is not Core Temp itself, but a process named "csrss.exe". When you start Core Temp, it produces some critical error which Windows can't handle which results in a BSOD. Again, I'm unsure what I did that caused this problem yet, but I hope I find out real soon.

I may have found a solution!
If you want to test the fix, please contact me via one of my IMs. My test system stopped crashing. I need more computers with this problem to confirm the fix is working.

Thanks,
Arthur

Dunno what to say, it works just fine now (version 0.95). The only difference now is that I am using that microcode fix from MS. Anyone else?

Can't even launch the app; system reboots... have you been able to determine what might be causing the problem? I would be willing to beta test bugfix versions.

Post by dubbydubby »

I don't know if this will help but here is my experience with Core Temp

CTvs: 0.95
CPU: Intel Q6600 ID: 0x6F7 RV: B3
FSB: 2997 (333.33 x 9.0)
MB: MSI p965 Neo
Mem: 4x1 gig ddr2 800
OS: XP sp2 (new install)

On my system when I first boot and start up core temp the program runs fine, but if I happen to close core temp and try to open it again the system immediately shuts down. I'm thinking maybe it has to do with whats being read from the registers or something written to the registers. In any case since Core Temp is already free why not post the source and maybe start an entire community of people helping debug and develop the software ;-)

He got it fixed dude. I have more or less your setup and have been using the 0.95.3 release for a long time now with no problems. Wonder when it'll go gold.

E6300 @ 3GHz (430x7)
P5B Deluxe WiFi-AP - P965, chipset drivers: 8.3.0.1013, BIOS 1212
X1600XT - Cataylst 7.7
4x512MB DDR2 Corsair 800MHz @ 860MHz 5-5-5-12
Win XP SP2

I've got the same problems like many others: after launching CoreTemp 0.95, my system immediately crashes (HDD's stop spinning and restart).
What is interesting, it was very fine before. I've got these crashes approximately one month ago: CoreTemp runs after system boot, it didn't crash right after boot, but randomly and about once in a week.
But i've reinstalled my OS to a new HDD (Hitachi 7K160), set CoreTemp to launch after boot, and it crashes every time!
So i thought that i've done something wrong...reinstalled again...it worked fine! But it comes again after second time i've restarted my PC (manually). Now it crashes every time i start it...even at stock speed.
I will be very happy to test the new version...sending PM right now...
PS: my english is bad, i apologize

Wow, your answer was really fast - thank you!
For now, it seems that it works good. I've set it to run after system boot and no problems!
If I notice anything unusual, i will udpate this post.
Once again - thanks!

Yep v.95.3 seems to have fixed the crashing. I have it running on and off over past 4 weeks and no more crashes. :)

Hi I am having the same issue with my PC.
If I load core temp my PC restarts, after it has restarted I can run core temp fine but after 10-20 mins it flips out and core temp crashes with out restarting my PC. I have temp logging enabled but the eventual core temp crash happens when I have it disabled to.

Is there any chance of getting the .95.3 fixed version ?

System is

E6400 at any where from 3.2GHz (Daily OC) to 3.8GHz (Max stable bench OC)
EVGA 680i (AR) P27 BIOS with latest nvidia chipset drivers (9.53 nforce winxp whql)
2GB G.SKILL DDR800 HZ at 800MHz 4-4-4-12 (Daily OC) and 1200MHz 4-4-4-12 (Max stable bench OC)
2x POV 8800GTS 640MB in SLi (Forceware 160.02)
Silverstone Strider 850W
Windows XP Pro with SP2 (Up to date on MS hot fixes/updates)

Thanks.
