How temps are read

Hey,

Can any one give me some detailed info on how temps are read on the Intel Core 2 and AMD processors... Like how many sensors are there, where they are, how they are read, formulas required from these readings etc etc...

Also how does the mobo read the temps, are there temp sensors on the mobo for the CPU etc... Also what causes errors in these readings and why BIOS updates can fix these troubles...
